Encounters with Lenin by Nikolay Valentinov (N. K. Volsky)
Requirements: .PDF reader, 7 mb
Overview: The author of these memoirs—then a very young man—met Lenin in the early years of last century. He knew Lenin under conditions which made it possible for him to watch day by day and at close quarters the future leader of the Russian revolution and the creator of the Soviet régime.
An enormous amount has been written about Lenin, but only a relatively small part of it is biographical in character. Volsky’s memoirs fill this gap to a greater extent than any other book published up to now. The author is right when he says that he can tell us things about Lenin which no one has ever before written down. This can be explained both by the circumstances in which he met Lenin and by his peculiarly personal approach to him. It so happened that he was able to enter into some recesses of his life which were closed to many other followers of Lenin. Volsky was enormously interested in Lenin at that time and his memoirs show the keenness with which he observed him. Lenin interested him not only as a political figure, but as a human being as well. Nevertheless, despite all his initial enthusiasm for Lenin, he did not lose his intellectual independence, or become a blind admirer, and he maintained his capacity for detached, shrewd observation. This is why Lenin comes to life so vividly in the pages of his book.
