Overview: The History of Karate Art :
From the 1950s to the 1990s, the takeoff of karate enthusiasm was astounding. In 1954, few Japanese knew of karate, and those that did considered it a foreign (Okinawan) import. Because the Allied Occupational authorities after World War II considered it to be some kind of Chinese exercise, it was not outlawed like the other purely Japanese fighting arts. Some claim it was allowed because American GIs wanted to learn karate to improve their own fighting skills. This enabled karate to start on its remarkable journey.
