Overview: Adam Crozier’s adventures take him from guerilla warfare and the battlefields of the Spanish Peninsular War to the savage Wild Coast of South Africa. He is wounded at the Battle of Vitoria and becomes infatuated with the beautiful young nun who nurses him – a love that is doomed from the outset. When Napoleon is finally beaten and sent into exile on Elba he returns to his family estate, encountering and besting murderous highwaymen along the way. There he rescues Lady Maureen Broxton, the reluctant wife of Sir Henry Broxton, when her horse bolts. Adam is challenged to a duel by a jealous Sir Henry. He wins the duel but cannot bring himself to kill Sir Henry. Unable to live near the woman he loves but can never marry Adam travels to London. On the way there he foils an ambush set for him by Sir Henry. In London he is recruited by his erstwhile commanding officer, Brigadier General John Robertson. General Robertson heads an intelligence service for the British Government. Adam is tasked with apprehending a mysterious figure that is suspected of smuggling arms and ammunition to the insurgent natives in South Africa. His investigation leads him to Sir Henry. Adam attempts to capture Sir Henry and rescue Lady Maureen but Sir Henry evades capture and sails for South Africa taking Lady Maureen with him. Adam pursues them in HMS Marlin. In South Africa Adam leads an expedition to intercept Sir Henry before he can exchange his cargo of muskets and gunpowder with the native insurgents for a load of precious ivory. In the final action at the mouth of the Great Fish river Adam succeeds in rescuing Lady Maureen and Sir Henry dies a gruesome death in the shark-infested waters of the Indian Ocean.
