Overview: Viking novella.
The year is AD 800. It’s the dawn of Norwegian raiding in the western isles of Scotland.
Norwegian Earl Forkun has sent out an expedition made up of the young sons of local farmers to get their first taste of sailing and raiding. Their sailing master, Grim Tambarskelve, decides to take his small crew across the north sea to the western isles of Scotland – the Sudreyjar – in their ship Black Hawk. The youngest of them is fifteen year old Lothin Vegeirsson on his first voyage, alongside his brother Toki and their friends Hallad and Ringulfr Erlendsson.
LothinSaga captures six episodes as Grim Tambarskelve seeks treasure from the Christian enclaves of the priests to take back home. For Tambarskelve, things quickly go awry. For Lothin there is a sudden, unexpected initiation where he grows in status from merely Toki Vegeirsson’s little brother into something more. And as the voyage continues it becomes clear they are not the only Norse ship in the area seeking treasure.
LothinSaga is a story of the sea’s cruelty, their ship – Black Hawk, the interplay of the Norse gods, comradeship, danger and resilience as they do battle with Pictish warriors, Christian priests and the elements. They balance their overwhelming desire for booty and treasure – ‘baugur’ – against their slender scruples. The winner really will take it all.
