Fade Out: The Calamitous Final Days of MGM by Peter Bart
Requirements: .PDF reader, 5.37 MB
Overview: Fade Out examines Kirk Kerkorian’s 20-year occupation of MGM studios: throughout the mergers and junk bond offerings, corporate musical chairs (with Kerkorian the only constant), the selling off of the film library (twice) and the company back lot. Meanwhile, MGM produced a succession of movies: some of them successful, some forgettable (and unreleased), most of them flops.

Author, Peter Bart meticulously commemorates Frank Yablans’ regime (of which Bart served as senior vice-president, starting in 1983). In those days the studio was thriving again, with potential blockbusters in development:

  • a big western with Jack Nicholson and Lauren Hutton,
  • a genre-hopping romance with Nick Nolte,
  • a sequel to 2001: Space Odyssey (1968),
  • a period piece love story featuring Diane Keaton and Mel Gibson.
  • a pretty boys sports drama with Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze.

Two years later the studio was left facing a sea of red ink along with one of the most embarrassing breach of contract suits in Hollywood history.
Fade Out is the story of what happens when a Las Vegas financier with little feel for the movie business attempts to operate one of Hollywood’s most venerable studios. It is an outrageously absurd and insightful ride through early-1980s Hollywood — concluding the unofficial Hollywood studios-debacles trilogy (starting with David McClintick’s Indecent Exposure & Final Cut by Steven Bach).
