Sammy Golden/Father Shanley Mysteries (#2-4,6,9) by Jack Webb
Requirements: ePUB reader, 3.50mb
Overview: The unlikely pairing of a Catholic priest with a Jewish police detective resulted in series of tough, hard-boiled novels by American author John Alfred “Jack” Webb.
Webb wrote fifteen novels in the Fifties and Sixties under his name, the pen name of John Farr, and a Western under the name of Tex Grady (High Mesa, 1952).
Webb was born in California and lived in Playa Del Ray. Before turning to writing, Webb worked as a bird-keeper in a zoo, a production supervisor at an aircraft company, and a technical writer.
Webb’s two lead characters—Father Joseph Stanley of St. Anne’s Church in the parish of Royal Heights and Sammy (Elijah) Golden, an LA Police Department —detective-sergeant were featured in ten novels.
Father Shanley was, by Webb’s description, a handsome young man in his early 30s who smoked a pipe and was physically fit. According to Webb, he was “a fighter by instinct, a man of cloth by devotion and inspiration.” In addition to once reigning as an intercollegiate boxing champion, Father Shanley served as a Navy chaplain with the Marines in World War II where he learned judo from a marine sergeant.
Like Shanley, LAPD’s Sammy Golden is in his early thirties and won a Purple Heart in the war. Golden never went out of his way to avoid violence, and readers were led to believe that he may have enjoyed it. In fact, now and then, Golden finds it necessary to do an end-around the law.
The detective is often in the company of fellow officer Red Adams.
