Requirements: .ePUB reader, 7 mb
Overview: The biblical book of “Illingworth’s development of the infant and the young child” is the holy grail of normal development and its variations; it is an account of personal experiences of the truly observant scientist. Decades after the book was first published, we continue to be amazed by the wisdom narrated through cases Dr Illingworth described, and studies from his workplace, the Sheffield hospital. He had foresight of genetics, possibility of early prediction, limitations of development tests and consistently emphasized role of good family environment.
Many of the diseases that affect development of a child are now understood better, their therapies have evolved and have been evaluated for outcomes beyond survival, i.e. long-term development. We have updated the book with recent references.
Medical research methodology has evolved from expert reviews over the last decades to scientific, unbiased evaluation of science. We have incorporated many systematic reviews to support diagnostic and therapeutics that are associated with child development; these have replaced some of the early studies on the same subject.
The changes in the book reflect the growth of development medicine – from early understanding of normal and abnormal to systematic efforts in minimizing childhood disability. This book attempts to organize currently available knowledge on risk factors affecting neurodevelopment, best practices to modify the risks and minimize childhood disability.
