Overview: Dan Cushman started work at the age of fifteen as a linotype operator and reporter on the Big Sandy, Montana, weekly paper. While in Big Sandy High School, he was correspondent for the Great Falls Tribune. Graduating from the University of Montana with a Bachelor of Science degree, he worked first as a miner, prospector, and geologist before becoming a fulltime writer. A prolific writer, Mr. Cushman is the author of over thirty novels. His best seller, Stay Away, Joe, was a Book-of-the-Month Club selection and the basis for the Broadway musical Whoop-Up. It also became an MGM motion picture starring Elvis Presley. He has authored several pieces of non-fiction which include Montana-The Gold Frontier and The Great North Trail. His awards include the Western Writers of America Spur Award for his book, The Silver Mountain and the H.G. Merriam Award for distinguished contributions to Montana literature. He has also received The Governors Humanities Award from the Montana Committee for the Humanities. Mr. Cushman has died of heart failure at 92 in October 2001.
