Overview: Mary Kate Genevieve Baker (later legally changed to Kage Baker), was born on born June 10, 1952 in Hollywood, California. She grew up in Hollywood, but lived most of her adult life in Pismo Beach, California.
Before becoming a professional writer Kage spent many years in the insurance business, as well as, the theater. During this time, she also taught Elizabethan English as a second language.
Kage’s unusual first name (pronounced like the word cage) was acquired at age fourteen. Her sister has confirmed Kage changed her name officially to Kage Baker, around 1972—two years after she graduated high school. Kage’s name was “Mary Kate Genevieve Baker” on her birth certificate, and she disliked it. She ran the names of her two grandmothers, Kate and Genevieve, together to get “Kage” during high school, and used that the rest of her life.
Kage spent much of the last year of her life watching and reviewing silent films. Many of her reviews were collected posthumously into Ancient Rockets: Treasures and Trainwrecks of the Silent Screen, edited by her sister Kathleen Bartholomew.
Kage Baker died on January 31, 2010 in Pismo Beach, California. She left an unfinished novel, Nell Gwynne’s On Land and At Sea, which was completed by her sister Kathleen Bartholomew based on extensive notes left by Baker, and was published in 2012.
