Overview: Once upon a time—between 1939 and 1943, to be precise—there was a very special magazine. Originally it was called Unknown, later Unknown Worlds. Either way, it was the first, if not the only, fantasy magazine whose direct ancestor was a science fiction magazine. That unique parentage, blending the subject matter of traditional fantasy and the rational attitudes of modem science fiction, gave Unknown a most distinctive, highly individual flavor. True, some of the characters roaming its pages were gods or genies, werewolves or witches, demons or dryads. But the world in which they did their things, more often than not, was not some fairy-tale kingdom in a hazy time that never was, but the everyday world the magazine’s twentieth-century readers lived in, with all the logical and illogical constraints, trials, and tribulations that come with that territory. Only in Unknownwould you find gnomes being unionized, or the ultimate showdown between Good
and Evil happening in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Sometimes those stories were light and zany, sometimes dark and sinister, but always they were entertaining. That was editor John W. Campbell’s avowed One Absolute Requirement for Unknown, and most of the readers it attracted during its brief life would agree that it met that goal in a uniquely refreshing, imagination-tickling way. Unfortunately, it was unable to survive the wartime paper shortage, so many readers today have never seen a copy—though they may well have heard of it. If you are one of the lucky few who knew Unknown in its first incarnation, this book offers you a chance to renew an old friendship. If you’re one of the younger ones encountering Unknown for the first time, it offers an introduction to something new, fun, and no longer generally available. Either way, I think you’re going to enjoy these stories.
