Overview: It’s 1971 and Jack Bernstein is struggling to make it as a rock ‘n’ roll manager. He lives in a basement apartment in Queens, and drives a temperamental old Volvo around the borough as he trolls for hidden talent overlooked by the agent/sharks of Manhattan. He twice suffers betrayal when he brings artists to the cusp of record contracts, only to see them stolen away by those very sharks. Jack produced a demo tape which got him deep into debt to a loanshark and a pawnbroker. Desperate to pay off his debts, he agrees to manage the obnoxious nephew of a mobster who promises to open doors for Jack. Jack puts Max in front of an all Black band in South Jamaica, Queens, with a long shot plan for success. This is a tour of the rock scene during its Golden Age, with side trips to recording studios, music venues, restaurants and neighborhoods all along the way. New York City of the Sixties era comes alive with all its intensity.
