Overview: Millie is a neglected, intelligent five year old left to her own mischievous devices in a minor English public (ie private) school where her father is headmaster. Adults treat her with amused indulgence, unaware of her fiendish Grand Master Plan to overthrow the social and moral world of the school. On the day of an old boys’ cricket match Millie unleashes the plot that results in her banishment and sends her mother spiralling into madness.

As she is about to leave, the school’s butler and housekeeper, the only adult characters viewed sympathetically, present her with a copy of the Bible. Millie is enraged by what she sees as a major betrayal, a delivery into the hands of “the very set of rules used by her enemies to trap and quell her”. The novel closes with Millie’s vow of vengeance, not upon the world of authority, whose power she seeks to emulate, but upon humanity itself, as she envisages the carnage she will unleash as a future General, Prime Minister and Priést rolled into one.
