Overview: At 25, Doug was diagnosed with cancer. Science that is the underpinning of SF enabled him to beat a formerly fatal type of neoplasm. Eight years later, two of three vital drugs new then and an anti-nausea medication have already been superseded, with a survival rate now reaching 95 percent.

Given a reprieve after a year in the cancer wards, it would be easy to think technology is the answer to all problems. He still thinks there is more to staying alive than manipulation of molecules.

Doug’s stories generally have a near-future setting, based on hard science mildly extrapolated. He puts ordinary people in extraordinary situations to see how they’re affected by technology and how they handle their problems. His high school creative writing teacher gave him a good start, and Stan Schmidt has added post-graduate courses in finished story telling. “Only the Weatherman” had to satisfy Dr. Schmidt through ten rewrites before appearing in the September 1990 issue. “Ryerson’s Fate,” April 1989, was the first Analog acceptance. A previous story had been rejected as not being speculative enough, but Doug was encouraged to try again by a personal note asking for more stories.

Contains all of Larsen’s fiction; all scanned and created from their original sources.
