Overview: John Dalmas, pseudonym for John Robert Jones was born on December 3, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois. His father died in 1933, and Dalmas grew up mostly in foster homes but twice in boarding houses, mainly with an aunt and uncle in the small rural village of Linden, Michigan. And briefly on a farm near Taylors Falls, Minnesota. As a teenager in rural Michigan, Dalmas was a farm and creamery worker.

In 1944, at age eighteen, Dalmas into the U.S. Army, went to infantry school, and volunteered for the airborne; serving primarily in the Philippines and fought in the Battle of Japan.

After being discharged from the U.S. Army in 1946, Dalmas worked variously as merchant seaman, a logger, and a general construction worker; until deciding to attend college at Michigan State.

After graduating from Michigan State with a Forestry degree, Dalmas worked as a research ecologist for the US Forestry Service, in which he published at least twenty pieces on ecology and high elevation forests.

In the late 1950s, Dalmas completed his Ph.D. and continued to work as a research ecologist in Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico.

Dalmas began his fiction career with the publication of The Yngling, a two-part novel serialized in the October and November 1969 issues of Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact.

John Dalmas died on June 15, 2017 in Ohio.
