Overview: Rachel Ruth Cosgrove Payes was born on December 11, 1922 in Westernport, Maryland to mine foreman Jacob A. Cosgrove and teacher Martha (née Brake). Cosgrove was educated at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Trained as a research biologist, she worked as a medical technologist at various hospitals. She married Norman Morris Payes in 1954; they had a son and daughter.
Mrs. Payes was one of the successors to L. Frank Baum, when the publishers of the famous “Oz” books decided to keep the series going after its originator could no longer continue, due to difficulties best described as immaterial. She has written numerous mystery and romance novels for Avalon Books, and has recently branched into science fiction mystery for the same publisher.
Rachel Ruth Cosgrove Payes died on October 10, 1998 in Brick Township, New Jersey.
