Overview: The conference at which these papers were originally presented was jointly sponsored by the Research and Development Committee of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies and the Russian Institute, Columbia University. Preparation of the manuscript was facilitated by a further grant from the Research and Development Committee and by the cooperation of the Russian Institute and its staff, especially John Hanselman and Nora Beeson, whose assistance was greatly appreciated.
The editors and contributors wish to make particular acknowledgment of the contribution of fellow scholars who participated in the conference: Stephen F. Cohen, Robert C. Tucker, Loren R.
