Overview: Stephen Tall (pseudonym of Compton N. Crook) was born on June 14, 1908 in Rossville, Tennessee.
Crook studied biology at Peabody College, and did graduate work at Arizona State University and Johns Hopkins University. He began teaching biology at Towson University in 1939, where he remained until his retirement in 1973.
In 1939, Crook married author Beverly Crook and had three children with her.
Although never satisfactorily traced (or proven), it is believed Compton Crook began his writing career under various undisclosed pseudonyms in the 1930s—probably writing only two or three non-paid short-short stories for a local publication.
Crook’s first verifiable published story was a winner in the Boy Scouts of America’s first short story writing contest; which was later re-written and published in 1955 as “The Lights on Precipice Peak” in Galaxy Science Fiction.
Crook did not become an active author until 1966, with the publishing of “Seventy Light-Years from Sol”, the first story in his immensely popular Stardust series. His short story “The Bear with the Knot on His Tail” was nominated for the 1972 Hugo Award for short fiction. His activity in the field grew in the mid-1970s before his death.
Compton N. Crook died in Phoenix, Maryland on January 15, 1981.
In 1983, the Compton Crook Memorial Award was established by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society in his name for best first science fiction novel in a given year; the first of which was awarded to Donald Kingsbury for his novel, Courtship Rite.
