He spent about twenty years living in Paris before settling in California. Baker’s fiction often blends speculative science, metaphysics, and dark fantasy, marked by a literary and psychological depth.
His debut novel, Symbiote’s Crown (1978), won the Prix Apollo in 1982, and his short story Still Life with Scorpion earned the World Fantasy Award in 1985. Other notable works include Nightchild (1979), Dhampire (1982), Webs (1989), and Ancestral Hungers (1996).
Baker’s stories have been widely translated—especially into French—and he remains respected for his intelligent, genre-crossing explorations of human and alien consciousness.
