Overview: Perry A. Chapdelaine (born Anthony di Fabio) on February 6, 1925 in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Anthony Louis Fabio and Beatrice Etta (née Perry). He was the only child of Anthony and Beatrice as his father was killed when Chapdelaine was six years old. His mother later remarried George Herbert Chapdelaine, a watchmaker and engraver; a marriage that yielded no other children.
After graduation from Mason City, Iowa, High School, Chapdelaine’s intention was to become a research chemist. He attended Mason City Junior College in his freshman year and then transferred to the University of Minnesota for his sophomore year.

In November, 1944, Chapdelaine joined the army and was sent to the University of West Virginia to be educated as a civil engineer. In August, 1945, with the war over, he was discharged from active service. He used his veteran’s benefits to enroll in the Iowa State Teachers College (now known as the University of Northern Iowa) where he graduated in 1947 with a B.A. in mathematics, and minors in chemistry, physics, and psychology.

When di Fabio was twenty-one he legally changed his last name to Chapdelaine. He furthered his education by attending George Peabody College for Teachers (now a part of Vanderbilt University). He joined the American Legion. In 1949 he obtained his M.A. in mathematics, with a minor in psychology.
Perry A. Chapdelaine died on November 24, 2015.
