Her ancestor, Thomas Mayhew of Martha’s Vineyard, believed his son who was lost at sea had not drowned but had been captured by Barbary corsairs. Intrigued by the possibilities, she delved into Moroccan history and traveled to Morocco. This led to her Pirates and Puritans historical fiction time-travel series.
