Overview: Dean Ray Koontz was born on July 9, 1945 in Everett, Pennsylvania.
While attending Shippensburg State College (now Shippensburg University), Koontz married his high school girlfriend Gerda Ann Cerra in 1966. In his senior year of college, he won a fiction competition sponsored by Atlantic Monthly magazine. He graduated from Shippensburg State College (now Shippensburg University), and his first job after graduation was with the Appalachian Poverty Program, where he was expected to counsel and tutor underprivileged children on a one-to-one basis.
In 1967, Koontz went to work as an English teacher at Mechanicsburg High School in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. After a year and a half in that position, his wife, Gerda, made him an offer he couldn’t refuse: “I’ll support you for five years,” she said, “and if you can’t make it as a writer in that time, you’ll never make it.” By the end of those five years, Gerda had quit her job to run the business end of her husband’s writing career.
In his spare time, Koontz wrote his first novel, Star Quest, which was published in 1968. Koontz went on to write over a dozen science fiction novels.
In the 1970s, Koontz began writing suspense and horror fiction, both under his own name and several pseudonyms, sometimes publishing up to eight books a year. After writing full-time for more than 10 years, he had his acknowledged breakthrough novel with Whispers, published in 1980.
