Overview: CLIFF’S EDGE AND OTHER STORIES deals with the travails of the human spirit and its inclinations when faced with society and its constraints. Always aware of the place of Japanese traditions in the present, Masaaki Tachihara places his characters in struggles to understand themselves and their worlds among the pressures of circumstance and custom. In “Cliff’s Edge,” Jirō eventually falls prey to the irrational prejudice against “mixed blood” that hounds him through the course of the story. His fiery independence remains unscathed. “The Archer” deals with a young woman’s confrontation with the forces of the secure past and the threatening present. She finds peace in the contemplation of the ancient Japanese art of equestrian archery—yabusame. Masako and Shuntarō, in “Torchlight Nō,” because of their passionate love for each other and for traditional values, struggle vainly to adapt themselves to the pressures of a shallow and modern society. The bonfire of the Takigi Nō brands this story and the lives of its two main characters with a peculiar and lasting significance. All three stories reflect Tachihara’s treatment of the complex dilemmas affecting every individual in a modern world.
