Overview: Vidkun Quisling is most probably the Norwegian political figure who has gained the greatest international recognition in the twentieth century. Because of the notoriety that resulted from his collaboration with the Germans during World War Il, his name has become synonymous wills the term traitor. Despite the recognition that Quisling’s name, evokes, he remains a mystery to a considerable extent because his life has not been placed within a proper historical context. In order to understand Quisling’s actions as a collaborator fully, it is necessary to have a total perspective of his involvement in Norwegian politics.

However, no political biography has yet been written that has received critical recognition as being comprehensive and authoritative, providing full coverage of Quisling’s life in its entirety. Quisling: A Study in Treason a detailed study of Quisling’s life. It focuses in particular on the changing position that he occupied in Norwegian politics. It frequently provides original information concerning Quisling and his party, National Union (Nasjonal Samling). One noteworthy feature of the study is its complete coverage of his activity during the entire period of the German occupation, whereas most previous accounts have dealt with the period after September 1940 in a perfunctory manner. The book is not a narrow monograph that is restricted in its narrative to Quisling’s person alone. A study of his life requires that attention be given to the society in which he lived and operated. Whenever necessary, he is therefore placed within the broader context of Norwegian historical development.

The study is the result of many years of research. The author made extensive use of Norwegian archival deposits when gathering material for the book It is based almost exclusively on such documentary material, supplemented by secondary sources in Norwegian and German. This book will be of interest to the educated general reader and the scholar alike. It provides insight into a highly publicized, yet little known, aspect of World War Il. It will also be useful for persons interested in topics such as international fascism, fascist ideology, right-wing nationalism in the 1930s, and so-called ‘fifth column’ activity during World War ll.
