Overview: Mary Jane Lumijarvi, who wrote under the pseudonym Mary Caraker, was born on September 19, 1929 in Astoria, Oregon, to Finnish immigrants who settled near Astoria, Oregon. She grew up in a rural Finnish-American community, and attended Willamette University, the University of Oregon, and San Francisco State University. She holds a BA and an MA degree in English Literature. She has taught in secondary schools in Oregon, Hawaii and California.
Caraker married Edward Emmett Caraker, a former U.S. Navy office and engineer in 1957, and was widowed in 1989.
At the age of 53, Caraker began writing fiction with the publication of “The Vampires who Loved Beowulf” for the January 1983 issue of Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact. She is mostly known for her five novels published between 1986 and 1997; two of which comprised her popular Seven Worlds series.
Mary Lumijarvi currently lives in California.
