Overview: The Officer Gunnhildur series, written by British-born author and journalist Quentin Bates, centers on Gunnhildur “Gunna” Gísladóttir, a widowed mother of two—one daughter and one son—who is also a grandmother. Middle-aged, sharp-witted, and grounded, Gunna is defined by her sardonic sense of humor and her quiet intelligence. In the early installments of the series she serves as a police officer, later rising through the ranks to become a sergeant.
The series comprises both novels and short stories and occupies the territory of police procedural fiction while firmly belonging to the tradition of Scandinavian crime writing. Its setting is the small Icelandic village of Hvalvík, whose seemingly placid surface conceals the darker currents explored throughout the books. The series marked Bates’s debut in fiction, beginning in 2010 with the publication of the first novel, Frozen Assets, also released under the title Frozen Out.
Bates was able to write the novel while attending a university writing course, which allowed him the rare luxury of taking one afternoon a week off from his day job. His path to fiction began in journalism, working for an obscure nautical trade magazine—a starting point that led through various professional detours before he finally committed himself to writing fiction. Aware of the fierce competition in the publishing world, Bates nevertheless resolved to try. With guidance and encouragement from his agent, he completed the manuscript and ultimately succeeded in selling the novel.
