Overview: Lee Hoffman, working name of science fiction fan and author, Shirley Bell Hoffman, was born on August 14, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois. She was briefly married to editor Larry Shaw from 1956 to 1958. She was the assistant editor on the science fiction magazines he edited, Infinity Science Fiction and Science Fiction Adventures.
After some early brief tales for fanzines, Hoffman began publishing science fiction professionally in 1967 with a short novel, Telepower, set subsequent to a nuclear holocaust. Between 1979 and 1983, she published three historical romances as Georgia York; though she is probably best known for her westerns.
Hoffman won the Western Writers of America Spur Award for her novel The Valdez Horses (Doubleday, 1967). In 1987, Hoffman was presented the Rebel Award, a lifetime achievement award for a science fiction fan “who has done a great deal for southern fandom.”.
Shirley Bell Hoffman died on February 6, 2007 in Port Charlotte, Florida.
