Overview: The three stories in The Knowledge Stone span fourteen centuries from the Dark Ages to the present day. In the first story, the reader is confronted with the brutal realities of life for young farm slaves in the 7th Century AD. The second story focuses on the privileged life of a high-born, haughty and extremely cruel teenage girl in the 14th Century. In the final tale, set in the 21st Century, the life of a feckless, dishonest and manipulative middle manager in a typical, large commercial firm takes centre stage. Woven around the mysterious Knowledge Stone, each story is a powerful and absorbing account of human actions, emotions and relationships, manifested in tightly-knit, often claustrophobic situations filled with acute drama and tragedy. Each story shows that the acquisition of the Knowledge Stone by one of the characters alters everything through its mysterious influence. The awesome meaning of its fundamental presence and power is revealed only obliquely through interspersed and concluding reflections.
