Midnite: The Story of a Wild Colonial Boy by Randolph Stow
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 1.2mb
Overview: In author Randolph Stow’s home state of Western Australia there was once a famous “bushranger” (or highwayman) called Moondyne Joe, a highly comic character who was quite remarkable at escaping from prison but was otherwise very dim-witted and accident-prone. He had a hideout in the Moondyne Hills, on land belonging to Stow’s great-grandfather, and according to family legend was once hidden from the police under Stow’s great-grandmother’s bed.
From the author’s nostalgic affection for these and other family legends grew this now classic story of Captain Midnite, a young, almost handsome bushranger who isn’t very bright, and his five good animal friends – Khat the Siamese cat; Gyp the sheepdog; Major, the Major Mitchell cockatoo; Red Ned, a tall and noble-minded horse; and a rather silly cow called Dora – who help him in his bushranging exploits.
Midnite is an adventure story of the best sort as the animals plot and scheme and rescue Midnite. And as in most children’s books, the escapades of the hero teach him morals – in Midnite’s case, the dangers of lying, card playing, alcohol and stealing. For children and adults alike, Midnite is a charming book full of grace and wit and laughter.
