Overview: The tumultuous decade of the 1840s is entering its first years with a greater potential for revolution than any period since the days of Charles I.

The first signs of increased literacy are showing in the lower classes, mainly in the form of political interest and revolutionary thought.
Adding to the political and social unrest, the towns have become festering hotbeds of disease. Typhoid, cholera, and lesser, undefined fevers are becoming endemic.
The country is closer to disaster than at any time in the previous two centuries.
In this background, the Andrews family is busily trying to establish itself as a wealthy, powerful entity, a leading force in the new Victorian Empireā¦
