Overview: During the harsh winter months of 1939-40 General Siilasvuo and his wilderness warriors won a brilliant victory at the most endangered section of the northern Finnish front in Suomussalmi. In Kuhmo the Finnish counter-tactics were developed further during heavy fighting; a superiorly equipped Russian division as well as a skier brigade were halted, encircled and partially annihilated by the numerically weaker forces. These battles are portrayed by the section’s commander with the same sovereign mastery of the subject, the same pattern-like clarity and exalted austere style art, which characterized his previous book about the Battles of Suomussalmi.
