Requirements: .ePUB reader, 374 KB
Overview: This unique, previously unpublished, annotated translation of Monteiro Lobato’s O Choque das Raças ou O President Negro: Um Romance Americano do Ano 2228 includes an Introduction by scholar Dr. Vanete Santana-Dezmann and a Foreword by translator Dr. Ana Lessa-Schmidt.
The novel is a prescient socio-political science fiction that looks forward to the time when racial tension in the United States is so severe that Blacks and whites have separated geographically, though they are still in one nation. Then a Black runs for president against a white male candidate and a white female candidate. Though written in the 1920s, the story foresees the internet, wall-sized televisions, on-line schooling, digital newspapers, worsening racial tension, and a Black male elected president of the United States.
This translation by Ana Lessa-Schmidt is a special bilingual edition with the original 1926 Portuguese alongside the English translation.
