Overview: Jakarta in the 1960s is the setting for Raumanen, a novel that focuses on the complex love affair between Raumanen, a Manadonese woman, and Monang, a Batak man. From the outset, their relationship is fraught with problems, mainly due to the couple s different ethnic backgrounds but an equally important theme is the questioning by women of social norms.
The novel boldly explores sensitive social issues and the changing position of women in Indonesian society. Manen, like many other young women, yearns to break out of the traditional molds imposed by society (and often perpetuated by older women), demanding more freedom in how she leads her life, explores her sexuality, and shapes her future.
When first published in Indonesia in 1977, Raumanen was regarded as controversial. Nevertheless, both at home and abroad, it was also hailed as an outstanding literary work by a woman writer and won a literary award from Yayasan Buku Utama for the best book of 1978. In 1982 it won the SEA-Write Award for Katoppo, making her the first ever female recipient of that award.
