Awaken, Witch! (Lightbeard’s School for the Broken #1) by N.A. Grotepas

Overview: I’ve been seeing things that should never exist.
My name is Ivy Danielle and the very fabric of my world is unraveling.
To be fair, it was already undone following the divorce, but I thought the worst of it was over once I got my own place to live.
But no. It got worse.
Then I thought it would end with the talking magpie and that man wearing wizard robes who made things move without touching them, but they both assure me I’m just getting started.
When your life takes a sudden nosedive, all you can do is hold on for the ride and learn to navigate the rapids. Some might call that “going with the flow,” I call it something far less romantic: survival.
A divorce and a move are two of the highest stressors a person can endure—and, as a neuropsychologist, I should know. I usually deal with head injuries and testing, however, and not… well, whatever is going on with me.
Matters were going as swimmingly as they could, all things considered, until I met them.
Oh, them. Them! It went down like this: during my first Christmas without my children, I wandered into a quaint new bookstore, looking for a calm place to wait out an evening snowstorm. To put it mildly, I saw things that I never should have seen.
That was the moment. The moment all the madness began.
Well, the new madness. The old madness was just your garden variety average mid-life madness: psychological patients needing testing and care, kids needing lunch money and hugs, laundry needing washing and folding, and all that normal, mundane stuff that we take for granted as being oh so hard.
I’d give anything to have that perspective back.
As far as I can tell, there’s no recovery now that I’ve met Lightbeard, Amanita (yes, of the poisonous mushroom variety), and their magpie called Pie.
They insist on me being the first student of their new school. They insist I’m destined for all kinds of things, notably things that involve what they call the “unseen world.” A hidden world! I’m not buying it, even with one of its very own denizens—a feathery one with beady black eyes—staring me square in the face and talking to me.
If I can’t overcome my curiosity to figure out what the crap is going on, these two are going to ruin my life to the point that I’ll have no choice but to check myself into a psychiatric hospital.
