Overview: Each year, since 1946, the Mystery Writers of America have compiled an anthology of the best works by its members. The New York Herald Tribune called the annual MWA anthology “an Event as well as an anthology.” And well it might be labeled an Event. For within these covers some of the top literary names are represented with stories of immense skill and talent which, when combined, guarantee hours of entertaining reading.
Two of the stories have never before been published, and among the many stellar authors represented here are Ellery Queen, Stanley Ellin, Margaret Millar, and Robert Bloch. The anthology includes stories that have been published in magazines as diverse as Cosmopolitan, Esquire, and Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine.
There is immense variety in the selections, and the pendulum of storytelling at its best swings from puzzles as classic as locked rooms and the theft of an idol’s eye to futuristic crimes bordering on the realms of science fiction and the supernatural and starring an assortment of characters as diverse as a mad bomber, apparitions with fiery heads, and a dog who corresponds with his master’s editor.
A fascinating sampler of crime, from beginning to end an exciting collection of entertainment, EVERY CRIME IN THE BOOK follows the tradition laid down in earlier MWA anthologies: quality, quantity, and infinite variety.
