Defiance Valley: The Complete Northwoods Stories of Frederick Nebel, Vol. 1 by Frederick Nebel
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 0.4mb
Overview: “THIS is a book of Frederick Nebel firsts: his first published story, his first series character, his first long novelettes (in a career filled with many of this length), and the first volume of his collected Northwestern yarns.

He broke into the rough paper fiction writing field with “Trade Law” in the July 1925 issue of North•West Stories.

Included in this collection are his first fifteen sales to North•West Stories and one to Action Stories. The handful of “Trail Tales of the North” short short stories all feature the same themes with recurring figures. Although purported to be true, these are obviously fiction. Ramblin’ Dad or “Free-trade” Jim narrate yarns from their past stressing a trait of survival or unwritten code of living (sometimes stronger than law) in the Canadian backwoods.

Northwestern yarns were obviously a genre that Nebel held an affinity for, as every one of these stories has strong plotting and a rapid fire—though not frantic—pace along with excellent dialogue that many fledgling writers struggle with. A signature writing style that would come to the forefront with his well-known series characters for the detective pulps was already here at the beginning, just in a slightly rawer form. More importantly these tales were a vehicle to showcase rough, elemental, action-oriented men. These sort of characters continued to appear throughout his entire career writing for the pulps…”
