Overview: Michiko Yamamoto was born in Tokyo in 1936. In 1969 she accompanied her husband to Australia and lived in Darwin for three years. Her first short stories resulted from this experience. In 1973 she was awarded the Shinchō Prize for New Writers for her story Mahō (“Powers”) and the prestigious Akutagawa Prize for Betei-san no Niwa (“Betty-san”)—the title story in a collection published that year by Shinchōsha. Several other collections of short stories followed: Razō (Shinchōsha, 1974); Umi to Satō-kibi (Bungei Shunjusha, 1982); and Birejji no Ame (Shinchōsha, 1982). Her novel Tenshi yo Umi ni mae appeared in 1981, and she has produced two volumes of poetry, Nichiyōbi no Kasa and Yamamoto Michiko Shishū, both issued by Shinchōsha in 1976.
