This is the fourth of five books by Shiel containing his major short stories and includes “The Tale of Hugh and Agatha,” “The Tale of Henry and Rowena,” “The Tale of Gaston and Mathilde,” “No. 16 Brook Street,” “The Tale of One in Two,” “The Tale of Charley and Barbara,” “The Bell of St. Sépulcre,” “The Primate of the Rose,” “The Corner in Cotton,” “Dark Lot of One Saul,” and “The Tale of Adam and Hannah.”
The first tale in the book titled ‘The Tale of Hugh and Agatha’ is a story about love, duty, and family. Rev. Hugh Ettrick receives a letter from a solicitor informing him that his aunt, Miss Natalia Ettrick, is lying at death’s door and wishes to see him. The conflict arises because Hugh is the minister of a chapel and has been absent from his duties frequently, causing dissatisfaction among his congregation. He must decide whether to prioritize his duty to his congregation or his duty to his family.
Agatha supports Hugh in his decision-making process by encouraging him to go and see his aunt, despite the potential consequences for his ministry. She understands the importance of family and the duty that Hugh has to his aunt. Agatha also takes on the responsibility of managing the chapel in Hugh’s absence, reassuring him that she can handle any complaints or issues that may arise. She is a source of emotional support for Hugh, helping him to navigate the difficult decision he must make.
