Overview: It’s exciting to see a new series launched and becoming successful. It was doubly so for the Coronation Close series which begins in 1936 – the year of the coronation that never was, King Edward the Eighth preferring to abdicate and marry his American twice divorced sweetheart. An added surprise was being invited by BBC Television to speak of my memories of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953, and this following on from the coronation that afternoon of King Charles the Third.

Not that the series is about royalty. It’s about working class people moving into houses with indoor bathrooms during the thirties. Friendships are made but the residents of Coronation Close have many stories to tell and secrets to keep.

I can’t help being fascinated by early twentieth century history, after all I was born a few years after the end of the Second World War. I heard all the stories of hardship and fear from my mother who never, ever watched a war film on account that she’d lived through the real thing – two world wars in fact!
