Overview: Keith John Kingston Roberts was born on September 20, 1935 in U.K. He was an illustrator and cartoon animator, turned science fiction author. He described himself as a political conservative and an anti-communist.
As an illustrator, Roberts did much to change the appearance of UK science fiction magazines, notably Science Fantasy, for which he designed all but seven of the covers from January 1965 until its demise in February 1967; and also New Worlds for a period in 1966. Roberts also illustrated several of his own 1980s titles, and published three works of nonfiction.
Several of his early stories were written using the pseudonym Alistair Bevan. His second novel, Pavane, which is a collection of linked stories, may be his most famous work: an alternate history novel in which the Catholic Church takes control of England following the assassination of Queen Elizabeth I.
Keith Roberts died on October 5, 2000 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, U.K.
