Overview: In 1962, a forty-six-year-old French politician met a nineteen-year-old girl at his parents’ home in Hossegor. The first letter he wrote to her on October 19, 1962, was followed by twelve hundred and seventeen others, which continued, never losing their intensity, until 1995, on the eve of his death. The letters of this man who was twice President of the Republic reveal completely unknown aspects of a profoundly private man whom everyone thought they knew. Two letters, among hundreds, bear witness to the constancy of this love. November 15, 1964: “I bless, my beloved, your face where I try to read what my life will be. I met you and immediately knew I was about to embark on a great journey. Wherever I go, I know at least that you will always be there. I bless this face, my light. There will never again be absolute darkness for me. The solitude of death will be less solitude. Anne, my love.” And the correspondence ends on September 22, 1995: “You have always given me more. You have been my chance at life. How could I not love you more?”
