Overview: Horace Leonard “H.L.” Gold was born on April 26, 1914. He was most noted for bringing an innovative and fresh approach to science fiction while he was the editor of Galaxy Science Fiction.
H.L. Gold sold his first short story, “Inflexure,” to Astounding Stories in 1934 under the pseudonym Clyde Crane Campbell. He made his living writing short stories for “pulp” science fiction, mystery, and romance magazines and scripts for radio programs. H.L. Gold was Jewish, and there are claims that he at first had to write under pseudonyms because publishers feared the readers’ potential antisemitism.
During the early 1940s, he also worked as a writer at Detective Comics (DC Comics) on several comic books, including Superman and Batman. In 1950 Gold founded the monthly magazine Galaxy Science Fiction, which emphasized satires on the contemporary United States. In 1953 Gold shared the first Hugo Award for best professional magazine with John W. Campbell, Jr., the editor of Astounding Stories.
H.L. Gold died on February 21, 1996 at the age of 81.
