Abbess Thaisia of Leushino: The Life and Spiritual Journey of a Disciple of St. John of Kronstadt by Abbess Thaisia, Maria Solopova
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 255 kb
Overview: Before Maria Solopova became Abbess Thaisia of Leushino, she endured illness, family opposition, and years of uncertainty to follow the monastic vocation that had taken hold of her heart.
Raised in nineteenth-century Russia and educated in St. Petersburg, Maria felt drawn toward prayer and service from childhood. Her path into monastic life, however, was neither simple nor sheltered. In this candid spiritual autobiography, she recounts the loss and illness that marked her early years, her struggle to obey both her parents and her calling, the severe trials of convent life, and the responsibilities that eventually led her to Leushino.
Thaisia also records the dreams and visions that shaped her vocation. She approaches them with caution, submitting them to experienced confessors for discernment rather than treating them as proof of her own holiness. The result is an unusually personal account of faith tested through suffering, obedience, leadership, and sustained labor.
Written at the urging of spiritual guides including St. John of Kronstadt, who encouraged its publication, this autobiography offers a rare first-person view of Russian Orthodox women’s monastic life.
This edition presents a new English translation made directly from the 1916 Russian edition and includes a translator’s note and glossary. It is especially suited to readers of Orthodox spirituality, monastic biography, ascetical texts and studies, women’s religious history, and accounts of Orthodox Christian vocation.
