Overview: JOE BAGEANT writes an online column that has made him a cult hero among gonzo-journalism junkies and progressives. He has been interviewed on Air America and comments on America’s long history of religious fundamentalism in the BBC/Owl documentary The Vision: Americans on America.
Born in Winchester, Virginia, Joe served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era and then moved west, living in communes and hippie school buses in and around Boulder, Colorado. In 1971 he began writing magazine and alternative newspaper articles about counter cultural figures such as Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, and Hunter S. Thompson. Very quickly he found himself writing about popular culture, media, and politics for the Rocky Mountain News, Denver Post, and other mainstream Western newspapers.
In 1981 he moved to the Coeur d’Alene Indian reservation in Idaho, where he built a cabin on twenty acres, lived without electricity, and worked with horses (what locals there call “stump ranching,” because after building a cabin the hard way, one is left surrounded by tree stumps). He tended reservation bar, taught at the tribal school part-time, and wrote for regional newspapers and magazines for several years. He also spent ten years in Eugene, Oregon, working for an international corporation that published agricultural magazines.
