Clark Ashton Smith’s work is most frequently viewed as somehow inextricably linked with that of his friend H P Lovecraft, Smith generally portrayed as the ‘less privileged but gifted’ poor relation. Without entering some inevitably futile debate about the relative worth of these gentlemen, it would be futile to deny an inextricable connection. It is even plausible to view each as the yin to the other’s yang of surrealist cosmicism. The subject matter so similar, the personalities dealing with it so diametrically different, yet there inarguably existed a rare mutual respect between the two men.
