Nolan Teague signed a tuition waiver nobody reads twice. The clerk filed it, the System read it back to him in flat gray letters, and the placement came up in the rain: PRACTICAL-INSTRUCTION LIVESTOCK.
CLASS: FEED (Tier 0). LEVEL 1. COMMAND 0.
At the Warden Academy, third-years need something live to practise their Command on. That is the whole of the job. The yard-master hands him two buckets and calls him Feed the way you’d say cart, and the board in the main hall has a slip of pear-wood with his name on it in the column nobody looks at.
Then the monsters stop touching him.
They don’t attack. They don’t flinch. They follow — a step ahead and a little to the right, matching his pace, waiting at the gate for a boy with no rank and no Tether and nothing on his sheet but a number that reads nought. The cadets at the top of the board are watching their own bonds come apart, watching their creatures sicken and fail, and the Academy grades them on exactly one thing they can no longer do.
Which means the ranked handlers — the ones with names inked and sanded and inked again at the top of the third-year column — have to come down to the culling yard and ask the feed boy for help.
Six of them, before the year is out. Every one of them out of options. Every one of them carrying something the Academy has no page for.
He was never supposed to survive the term. Nobody told the monsters.
