Overview: Eighteen-year-old Zach Reynolds isn’t looking for romance when he leaves his small Texas hometown for Houston.
He’s looking for a job, an apartment he can afford, and a chance to figure out how to live on his own.
Then he finds an old letter his mother never meant him to see.
Written by a man who knew his mother before Zach was born, it raises a question she’s spent his entire life refusing to answer: Who is his father?
Finding out won’t be easy. Neither, as it turns out, will navigating his new life.
There’s Aurora, the beautiful neighbor he meets after an argument in the parking lot, who soon becomes much more than the girl next door. Ashley, his demanding supervisor at the grocery store, isn’t quite the person she first appears to be. A chance encounter with Lily, a college freshman with a spilled drink, leads Zach to Martha, a gorgeous university custodian who unexpectedly helps him find the best job he’s ever had.
One by one, these women draw Zach into lives very different from the one he left behind. Some offer friendship. Some offer inspiration. Some open doors he never knew were there. And some make it increasingly difficult for an eighteen-year-old on his own for the first time to know exactly where friendship ends and something else begins.
All the while, Zach keeps following the one clue his mother left behind, hoping it will lead him to the man whose absence has shaped his entire life.
He came to Houston looking for independence and an answer to a question he’s been asking all his life. He didn’t expect either search to become so complicated.
