Overview: No Future But Forward is a novel about the difference between knowing history and living inside it.
Chief Petty Officer Cole Rutherford has spent fourteen months volunteering for anything that keeps him from thinking about his son. A live fire training dive off Coronado should be routine. Instead, a current takes him and his dive partner Tran somewhere the mission planners never authorised: the beach at Guadalcanal, August 1942, three days after the Marines landed.
Cole knows how this campaign ends. He has the casualty lists memorised, the dates, the names of men who are about to die for a jungle airstrip that history says the Americans barely hold. What he does not know is whether telling anyone what he knows will save lives or cost them, or whether the squad that takes him in, and the boy who reminds him too much of the son he lost, are people he is allowed to save at all.
A recovered device may be the only way home. Using what Cole knows about the future may be the only way to keep the men around him alive. He cannot have both, and every choice he makes writes itself into a war that was supposed to be over before he was born.
