Overview: The last ship of a dead navy answers to one man. He’s broke, disgraced, and he didn’t ask for it.
Eli Navarro was thrown out of the Navy for opening a hatch he was ordered to keep shut. Three years later he hauls junk through the asteroid belt in a tug he still owes money on.
Then his grapple bites into a hull that rings like a bell.
Buried inside the rock is an alien warship, four centuries asleep. It reads his court-martial, line by line, and decides he’ll do. Selection criteria satisfied. Its reactor is at three percent. Its frozen crew has forty hours to live. Only Eli can give it orders, and he refuses to give any to them.
Commander Ysolde Varn wakes up with a sidearm in her hand and a looter in her captain’s chair. She is six and a half feet of horns, rank and fury, and she outranks him by one entire navy. Lieutenant Pell Ondra, the chief engineer, finds the sock he used to patch her reactor. Neither of them owes him anything. Both of them will choose.
A claim-jumper wants the ship stripped. A mining company wants it sued. And the captain who ended Eli’s career is coming with a cruiser.
