So the Lantern Company locks a silver cuff on every hunter’s ear that caps her power at Two-Lantern, the second of five ranks, calls it mercy, and nails her kills to the Crown Wall under its captains’ names.
The Company posts Ty to Grayfen, the dead outpost on the Deepwild’s edge, as a wick: a body to keep its last ember lit. Nobody expects him to last. But the System has given him a class the Line hasn’t seen in three hundred years.
Warden.
He reads sign: the scuff on a ford stone, the wound that proves whose arrow made a kill. In a beastkin woman he reads where the cuff is choking her and how close she is to the Red Run, the frenzy that burns a hunter out. If she asks him to lead her, he steadies her, and her power keeps climbing. The cuff doesn’t loosen. It shatters.
The bond can’t be ordered, bought, or forced. She has to ask out loud.
Svala Redbrush has the best bow on the Line, honey-blonde hair, a white-tipped fox tail, and hips her buckskin was never cut for. Four years of her kills hang under a champion’s name, and Ty is the first man to say so. Now she wants something with the Warden that no one can ever take from her.
