Overview: The south read his D-rank as a forgery. Then he dropped their failing sea wall on a beast tide. On purpose.
Davin Kolt tore down buildings on Earth until the crossing-light dropped him into Vardessia with a demon mark burned into his forearm. Guild stones can’t read it, so his record shows one summon nobody can name. Every pact the mark seals makes his partner stronger than her own class allows.
Now he and his partner ride south. At Hessel Ford, the last walled town on the road, the dungeon under the salt flats spits out its beast tides early: salt-crusted hounds, armored rams the size of carts.
The Ford’s best spear says it to his face. “That’s not a rank. That’s a clerical error.”
Copper braid, brass ring at the tail. Freckles that keep going past the collar. A laced jerkin losing its fight with her bust. The fighting pits under Morvant called her the Red Braid, the only champion who ever bought herself out. The crowd bet on how long she’d last; laughing was the one thing on the sand that stayed hers. Her own class sealed her best charge after it nearly killed her, and the forged-looking summoner carries the only pact that gives sealed skills back.
Now she picks who watches. She picks him, and none of it fades to black.
She asks his partner before she asks him: the golden-haired scout with the longbow and leathers filled to the last stitch. The scout doesn’t do jealousy. She does audits, chalked on the wall of the dead lighthouse they now call home.
Someone is aiming the tides at the Ford. Relief wagons carry its refugees south to a pit-master who collects anything that fights. A chain-branded hunter got there first, and he’s paying. When the tide clock breaks, the old men say, the dungeon empties at once. It’s breaking. At the bottom waits a brood-mother no crew has reached in forty years, and Davin’s mark burns toward her.
His record still reads D-rank. Down here, it’s wrong the other way.
